I. Project Title: The Development of Grotto in Xumishan Mountain Scenic Spot
II. Contents of the Project: The project is to remedy the important grotto and Jinyun Temple in Xumi Mountain comprehensively, to protect and manage it according to the demands of cultural relics protection, to set up a research institute for grotto art, to resume the original appearance of Shimen Pass and the silk road, to build a reception center with necessary facilities, to conserve gradually the vegetation on Xumishan Mountain and in the surrounding area stretching 10 square km and to carry out the works for the prevent of flood and preservation of the water and soil.
III. Conditions for the Operation of the Project: Xumishan Mountain Grotto is located at the west of the expressway from the capital of Ningxia to Guyuan City, so the transportation is convenient. All visitors who travel between Yinchuan and Guyuan can visit the grotto. As one of the ten famous Grottos in China, it attracts visitors home and abroad. It was authorized as a key national cultural relics ruins by the State Council in 1982.
IV. Market Prospect: Xumishan Mountain Grotto was constructed in later Qin Dynasty and Northern Wei Dynasty, which had prospered during Northern Zhou and Tang dynasties. Its artistic achievement can compare favorably with the huge Yungang Grotto in Shanxi Province and Longmen Grotto in Henan Province. As the ancient cultural ruins along the Silk Road, the Xumishan Mountain Grotto has already lasted more than 1 500 years. The appearance of the grotto has been degraded by the trials and hardships of years, which increases the annual ring of the culture of grotto. It is a pity that the decline of Silk Road made the external traffic stop, which cut off gradually after Ming Dynasty, especially in modern times. In addition, very few past documents are recorded, even the natives seldom concern or know its existence. It was discovered by the antiquary in the fifties of the 20th century and aroused the attention from common people.
V. Estimated Investment of the Project: The total investment of the project is RMB¥160 million.
VI. Progress of the Project: The overall planning and detailed planning of the scenic spots are being designed, which will be finished on May 2006.
