Singapore will be promoting research and development (R&D) to strengthen it information communication capabilities, especially in the area of interactive and digital media (IDM), a senior official said here.
To demonstrate its resolve in developing this area of R&D, the government is investing 500 million Singapore dollars (about 347 million U.S. dollars) over the next five years to fund the development of a strategic IDM research program, said Lui Tuck Yew, minister of State for Education, at the launch of an infocom fest.
A multi-agency IDM R&D program office was set up within the Media Development Authority of Singapore in October last year, with the support of many government agencies. It oversees R&D initiatives to spur this sector's growth.
According to Lui, a R&D program has also been established at the Education Ministry to leverage IDM to transform education, by harnessing IDM to teach and learn in fun and engaging ways.
