Report Highlights
In 2006, online banking experienced rapid development. Trading volume and the number of transactions of online banking rose substantially. While enterprise online banking still takes the lion's share, the personal online banking market holds immense potential. In 2005, trading volume of enterprise online banking came to 70.2 billion yuan, taking up as much as 96.7% in the total trading volume, with a rise of 21.3 billion yuan from 2004. In 2005, personal online banking developed rapidly in China. In particular, personal users of China Merchants Bank, Industrial & Commercial Bank of China and the Agricultural Bank of China topped 50%. The personal online banking market soared 300%. The number of personal online banking users rose even faster: As of the end of 2005, personal online banking users came to 34.6 million, up 103.5% from 2004, taking up 38.7% among Internet users. Trading volume increased from 600 billion yuan in 2004 to 2.4 billion, with a rise of 300%. In the next four years, the enterprise online banking market will see steady growth, while the personal online banking market will continue to grow rapidly. From 2007 to 2008, trading volume will multiply. After that, growth will slow down. By 2010, trading volume of personal online banking is expected to top 30 billion.
In addition, online banks actively partner with e-commerce enterprises to tap the online banking market as alliances. The Industrial & Commercial Bank of China teams up with Sohu, Alibaba, and the Agricultural Bank of China joins hands with Shanda. Online banking is turning into business operations that produce actual benefits, and even becoming a tool for improving commercial banks' brand image and market competitiveness.
