According to CCID Consulting, annual jewellery consumption in China has now reached USD17 billion. The market capacity now grows at a rate of 15%. Data show that annual consumption of jade and pearl ornaments stands at about USD40 million, making China the largest consumer. Diamond ornament consumption amounts to RMB30 billion, ranked the 5th in the world. Gold ornament consumption reached 241.4 tons, up by 8% year-on-year, only after India and the United States.
Sales revenues in China’s jewellery market in 2005 amounted to USD140 billion, while export value stood at USD5.49 billion, representing one of the greatest sales in the world. Gold output reached 225 tons, while silver output stood at 6,000 tons, ranked 3rd and 4th in the world, respectively.
As the Chinese economy grew and people’s living standard rose, jewellery was becoming the third largest consumption hotpot for ordinary people in China, only after housing and automobile.
By 2010, annual jewellery sales in China will reach RMB200 billion, while export will value USD7 billion. China is expected to become the most competitive jewellery processing and consumption center. It will also become one of the jewellery trade centers in the world.
